AFF Suzuki Cup: Thailand subdue Singapore 2-0 to top Group A, will meet Group B runners-up in the semis

KUALA LUMPUR – Five-time title holder Thailand emerged champions of the 2020 AFF Cup Group A, after defeating hosts Singapore 2-0 in the battle for the top spot at the Singapore National Stadium, last night.

The War Elephants took the lead when Sweden-born Yusef Elias Dolah tapped in Bordin Phala’s beautiful free-kick which was not neatly saved by goalie Hassan Sunny in the 31st minute.

Thailand, the most successful team in the tournament, doubled the lead just before the break when Supachai Chaided slotted in another goal in the injury time (45+2).

Though both teams had already secured their semi-finals berth, they continued their attacking game in the second half in the hunt for the top spot, as the group champions will meet Group B runners-up in the semi-finals.

The 2-0 score remained till the final whistle, keeping Thailand’s clean record, after having beaten Timor Leste 2-0, Myanmar 4-0 and Philippines 2-1, while Singapore faced their first defeat in the campaign after defeating Myanmar 3-0, Philippines 2-1 and Timor Leste 2-0.

Meanwhile, Bienvenido Maranon’s first-half hat-trick helped the Philippines to edge Myanmar 3-2 to finish third in the group.

The 35-year-old veteran striker fired the net in the 16th, 19th and 45th minutes to complete his hat-trick and hand the Azkals their second win.

Myanmar tried to bounce back through a brace from Htet Phyo Wai in the 74th and 86th minutes to reduce the margin.

Thailand topped Group A with 12 points, followed by Singapore (9), Philippines (6), Myanmar (3) and Timor Leste without any points.

In the Group B fixture tomorrow, Malaysia will be clashing with arch-rivals Indonesia in a must-win match at the Singapore National Stadium, while reigning champions Vietnam will be playing Cambodia at Bishan Stadium. Both matches are scheduled at 8.30 pm. – Bernama, December 19, 2021
