KUALA LUMPUR – With 13 gold medals under his belt, national karate champion Soman Roy had announced his retirement from the sport earlier this month through a heartfelt post on social media.
After being in the sport for 17 years and representing the nation for eight years, Soman shared his gratitude and appreciation to all those who have helped him achieve success throughout his career.
“I couldn’t be more thankful for the opportunities and people I have met along this incredible journey.
“All this experience has brought me so much joy, love, tears, highs, lows, and the most amazing relationships that will last a lifetime,” he said in his Instagram post.
The 24-year-old also thanked all his coaching staff and people throughout the years that believed in him and helped him train to become a better fighter.
“I am extremely grateful to all my teammates that have trained along with me all these years.
“Thank you to my parents, friends and the rest of my family for all the unconditional love and support all these years.
“Truly appreciate it and love you all.
“Unfortunately, a bittersweet ending to the career but my passion towards sports and the country will always remain the same,” he added.
Soman also thanked the staff, doctors, physiotherapists, masseurs, physiologists and nutritionists he has worked with at the National Sports Institute.
Sharing the lessons that he has learned throughout his sporting journey, he says: “My biggest advice and lesson learned is to always work hard and never give up.
“No matter the circumstances, enjoy and cherish every moment because time flies. Embrace your teammates and always stay positive.
“And finally, learn to just have fun. Enjoy yourself,” said Soman.
As a seven-time national champion, two-time Sukma gold medallist, SEA Games champion, world champion, and two-time Asian champion, Soman has brought the nation great pride with his achievements and is looking forward to what comes next. – The Vibes, January 20, 2022
