KUALA LUMPUR – National top badminton player Lee Zii Jia cruises into the quarterfinals of the German Open after defeating Christo Popov of France in the round of 16 today at the Westenergie Sporthalle in Muelheim An Der Ruhr.
It took Zii Jia 17 minutes in the first set to dismantle Popov 21-13.
However, the Frenchman bounced back 18-21 to force a third set showdown.
Zii Jia then mustered his strength to secure a 21-12 win in the rubber set.
He will either face China’s Zhao Jun Peng or South Korea’s Heo Kwang-hee tomorrow in the quarterfinals.
The other Malaysians playing in the round of 16 today are doubles pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin, who take on Denmark’s Joel Eipe-Daniel Lundgaard, and Vivian Hoo-Lim Chiew Sien, who face Scottish duo Julie Macpherson-Ciara Torrance.
Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi and Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing will be going up against England’s Ben Lane-Sean Vendy and Gregory Mairs-Jenny Moore respectively. – The Vibes, March 10, 2022
