KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) has inked a partnership with Celebrity Fitness as their official fitness partner until 2023.
Head coach of the men’s national field hockey team Arul Selvaraj said the partnership will be beneficial for the team especially during off periods.
“When there is no hockey, we still need to train, we call it the empowerment week.
“I think partnering with Celebrity Fitness will help take our strength and conditioning to the next level,” he said during a press conference at the national hockey stadium in Bukit Jalil today.
Players will have access to Celebrity Fitness gyms and facilities nationwide.
Meanwhile, MHC announced Tom Drowley from the UK as the new head physical trainer.
MHC technical development director Paul Revington said Drowley’s primary role would be to lead the senior men’s hockey team in physical training and preparations heading towards the 2023 Hockey World Cup and 2024 Olympics games.
“Tom’s additional role will involve overseeing and working with the project 2026 teams, and in the short term working with the junior men’s team to prepare for the 2023 Junior Hockey World Cup, which will be hosted by Malaysia.
“He will also be guiding the physical development of a very promising ladies’ squad over the coming years,” he said.
Arul also added that the partnership with Celebrity Fitness and Drowley’s arrival come as a good time for the national team.
Drowley has worked professionally for over a decade in elite sports including international tennis, professional rugby, and seven years working with the Great Britain (GB) hockey team in the world and Olympic level.
Most recently, Drowley led the physical preparations for the (GB) women’s hockey team into the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where they won the bronze medal.
He also assisted the men’s and women’s teams going into the 2016 Rio Olympics, where the latter won gold. – The Vibes, March 14, 2022.
