M’sia kickstarts S’pore Open track, field campaign with two golds, one bronze

KUALA LUMPUR − The Malaysian contingent kicked off their campaign in the 82nd Singapore Open Track & Field Championships 2022 with a haul of two golds and a bronze yesterday.

Teen sprinting sensation Muhammad Azeem Fahmi triumphed in the men’s 200m event − clocking in at 21.52s ahead of hosts Reuben Rainer Lee (21.59s) and Jonathan Bull (23.13s) representing the Wings Athletics Club.

The country’s senior sprinter Jonathan Nyepa ended in fifth place with 31.62s.

Earlier, the 17-year-old Azeem finished first in the preliminary round − recording 21.78s in Heat 2 while Jonathan was fourth with 22.45s.

Meanwhile, K. Prabudass emerged victorious in the men’s 1,500m event − clocking in at three minutes and 54.23s. 

The silver and bronze medals were won by Alfrence Braza (3:59.19s) of the Philippines and S. Jeevaneesh (4:00.99s) of Singapore while another Malaysian representative Mohammad Amirul Arif Mohd Azri ended in fifth with 4:15.85s.

Former Paralympic champion Muhammad Ziyad Zolkefli bagged the bronze medal in the men’s shotput event by setting a new season-best hurl of 16.54m − a slight improvement from his 16.27m throw in the Malaysia Open last month.

The Philippines conquered the podium as John Albert Mantua (17.33m) and William Edward Morrison (16.61m) swept the gold and silver respectively.

Another Malaysian, Farm Loong Deng, missed out on the medal by 0.1m − finishing fourth with his 16.44m effort. – Bernama, April 17, 2022
