KUALA LUMPUR – While many will remember the late Tan Sri S. Subramaniam as one of the longest-serving senior members of MIC, he was also an avid supporter of and contributor to Malaysian football.
Unbeknownst to many, Subramaniam was a council member of Selangor FA for 20 years, from 1990 to 2010, as during that time he was also president of the Selangor Indian Association.
By virtue, he played a key role in the development of Malaysian Indian athletes, as he was the president of the Malaysian Indian Sports Council for 11 years, from 2000 to 2011.
With his influence on the growth of the nation’s football scene, he was also appointed as a council member of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) by the late Sultan Ahmad Shah from 2000 to 2010.
Speaking to The Vibes, FAM deputy president Datuk S. Sivasundaram said: “He (Subramaniam) was a very keen sportsman. He played a big role in the development of football in our country during his time.”
“I have known him for over 30 years. To me, he is a very kind and generous man.
“When he took up the responsibility to uplift Malaysian football, he was totally committed to the fight,” he said.
Sivasundaram added that Subramaniam always took a personal interest in football, as he was a fan of the sport.
“His passing is a true loss to football in our country. May he rest in peace.”
Sivasundaram also conveyed his deepest condolences to Subramaniam’s widow, Puan Sri Tina Subramaniam, and her family over the passing of the late politician.
Subramaniam passed away in his sleep yesterday after a protracted illness. He was 78.
The veteran politician had been in a comatose state since suffering from a brain aneurysm 11 years ago.
He was one of the longest-serving senior members of MIC, holding the deputy presidency post from 1979 to 2006. – The Vibes, July 6, 2022
