KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia Stadium Corporation (MSC) will issue a show cause letter to the organiser of the recently cancelled cycling event in Bukit Jalil, Rise International Sports Exhibition Sdn Bhd.
In a statement, MSC also denied involvement in any coordination of activities and event organisation carried out by the MyCycleXpo 2022 organiser, other than being the manager of the venue, which took place from July 29 to 31.
MSC was responding to The Vibes’ article on the incident of 500 cyclists who were “abandoned” by the organiser of a cycling programme they had registered and prepared for on the very day the event was scheduled to be held at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil, here, last Sunday.
MSC said they were informed of the cancellation of the Enduride Challenge and Fun Ride with Stars events at the last minute when they were about to start.
“They booked Axiata Arena to host the event and engaged in various activities such as the exhibition and sale of bicycle products, push bike races as well as the Enduride Challenge, and Fun Ride with Stars, among others.
“The reason given by the organisers was that they failed to get a permit to carry out the two activities, and the staff who were supposed to manage these activities failed to be contacted and were not at the location during the event.
“As a result, the organisers decided to cancel the Enduride Challenge and Fun Ride with Stars activities immediately,” read the statement.
MSC also said that the Youth and Sports Ministry had no direct involvement in the coordination of the event, and only provides support to make the event a success.
The ministry, it said, also noted that it was inappropriate to cancel the event at the eleventh hour as the participation from the public was overwhelming.
The ministry and MSC were assured by the organisers that participants will receive refunds for their registration fee as soon as possible. – The Vibes, August 4, 2022
