KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian mixed-doubles pair Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing’s luck has run out as they were knocked out of the BWF World Tour Finals by China’s Huang Ya Qiong-Zheng Si Wei, losing the semi-final match 21-10, 21-15.
In a match that took 27 minutes in Bangkok, Thailand, the world-number-eight Malaysian pair faced a considerable challenge as they have never beaten the third-seeded Chinese duo in their previous seven encounters.
Kian Meng-Pei Jing trailed from the start of the first set, unable to match the power of their opponents who have won seven BWF World Tour titles this year.
The second set saw a similar pattern with Ya Qiong-Si Wei maintaining a steady lead and eventually closing out the match to book their spot in tomorrow’s final.
The Malaysians made it through to the semi-finals after they won against home favourites Supak Jomkoh-Supissara Paewsampran in their final group stage match yesterday, placing them second in the group.
Kian Meng-Pei Jing dedicated their World Tour Finals campaign to coach and former Malaysian shuttler Chin Eei Hui, who will be leaving the camp now that their tournament is over.
Along with them, the only other Malaysian pair to make it into the semi-finals was men’s doubles pair Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi.
However, world number eight Yew Sin-Ee Yi could not overpower Indonesia’s Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan, losing the match 17-21, 21-13, 21-19 earlier today. – The Vibes, December 10, 2022
