KUALA LUMPUR – What makes up a successful world-class athlete?

For the unbeatable badminton ace, world number one men’s singles shuttler Viktor Axelsen said having a wholesome support system is what matters to him.

Following his 2022 season-ending win at the BWF World Tour Finals, the 29-year-old Dane continued to stamp his mark with his first win at this year’s season-opener Malaysia Open.

Defeating Japan’s fast-rising star Kodai Naraoka in the final yesterday also made him the first European men’s singles player to defend the title.

When asked about the sacrifices he had to make to be where he is now, the father of two replied “nothing”, except the ability to balance everything in his life.

“I have two beautiful daughters and a beautiful wife, all who take my mind off badminton a little bit.

“I have a good balance in life on and off the court, as well as good coaches and the team around me. That is the secret,” said the Olympic gold medallist.

Winning the recently concluded Super 1000 event contributed to his 22nd World Tour title, including four Super Series.

However, he admitted that he still has a long way to go compared with former world number one and legendary Malaysian player Datuk Lee Chong Wei, who he idolises.

Chong Wei has garnered a total of 47 Super Series titles, including 1 World Tour – 12 of which is an all-time record from the Malaysia Open.

Two-time world champion Viktor spoke of his respect for the three-time Olympic silver medallist.

“Chong Wei is a big role model and was an amazing player. I play against him in this arena (Malaysia Open) and I am happy he is not playing anymore because he was so good,” teased Viktor.

“However, I am just really happy to have my name on the list – I feel inspired by players like Chong Wei – and to be able to look up to him and hopefully try to do well as he did.”

Chong Wei retired in 2019 due to nose cancer after an illustrious 19-year career.
