SHAH ALAM – The Malaysian Junior Development Tour is back with its second edition with more venues in hopes of paving the way for future successful professional golfers to take on the world stage.

Organising chairman Andrew Ng said this year’s title sponsor is renowned golf brand Srixon.

The tournament will cover five venues, he added.

The first leg will be held at Templer Park Country Club on May 16-18, followed by a standalone leg at Miri Golf Club on June 13-15.

Subsequently, Subang National Golf Club will host the second leg on July 4-6, and Kota Permai Golf and Country Club will host the third leg on September 19-21, with Forest City Golf Resort being the venue for the grand final on October 24-26.

“Last year, we ran a successful programme for the junior tour, where we had four venues. “This year, we strive to improve and do better by pushing the standards of junior golf events in Malaysia.

“We want to give them a good experience when they go out to compete internationally.

“As such, we included premium golf clubs this year like Kota Permai, Forest City, and especially Subang National Golf Club, where it would be usually difficult for junior golfers to get in if you are not a member,” he added.

Ng said that each venue is limited to 116 participants for golfers between the age of 10 to 18 years old.

Malaysian Golf Association honorary secretary Datuk Zulkilfi Ismail says there are 341 junior golfers with handicaps currently registered with the association. Of the total, 244 are boys, while 97 members are girls. – SAIRIEN NAFIS/The Vibes pic, March 22, 2023

He also said that the first leg serves as a qualifier for the Singapore World Junior Masters happening on June 20-22 where only 12 junior golfers will be selected to represent the country.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Golf Association honorary secretary Datuk Zulkilfi Ismail said there are 341 junior golfers with handicaps currently registered with the association.

Of the total, 244 are boys, while 97 members are girls.

“We need more of this type of tournament, as it helps to develop golfing talents from a young age, which we are still lacking in junior-level golf tournaments,” he said.
