KUALA LUMPUR – Selangor FC bounced back from their crushing defeat to Johor Darul Ta’azim before the International break in style after beating arch-rivals Kuala Lumpur City FC last night.
The Red Giants came back from a goal down and won 3-1 at Kuala Lumpur Stadium in Cheras.
Still looking for their first win in the Super League, KL City broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute after striker Tchetche Kipre scored to give the home side the lead.
However, in the 30th minute, Selangor’s Colombian forward Ayron del Valle Rodriguez equalised through a penalty kick after a KL City player handled the ball in the box.

In the 40th minute, Selangor took the lead when they were awarded another penalty kick by the referee for a foul committed by KL City goalkeeper Muhammad Azri Abdul Ghani.
Selangor’s star player Mohamad Faisal Abdul Halim stepped up this time to score from the spot kick.
In the second half, Ayron scored his second goal of the night and Selangor’s third in the 53rd minute in front of 4,240 fans.
With this win, Selangor has now won nine out of 15 Klang Valley derbies against their fierce rivals.

This defeat for KL City means that they are still looking to win their first match in the 2023 Super League season.
Meanwhile, Selangor head coach Tan Cheng Hoe said the win was a much-needed morale booster for his players after their 4-0 loss against JDT.
“We knew this was going to be a tough match because it is the Klang Valley Derby. Things started to get tense even before kickoff.”
Tan added that the absence of 13 of his players who were recently called up for national team duties had affected their training routine.

“The last 10 days of training have not been smooth because it is difficult as a coach to have 13 players absent.
“We only got our full squad back in training on Thursday, but the players knew what to do and they gave their best. I am proud of their performance in this match,” he added.
At the same time, KL City head coach Bojan Hodak said that individual mistakes from his players gave Selangor the opportunity to capitalise.
“At the beginning of the match, both teams were equal. We scored from a counterattack and took the lead.

“Everything was going according to our plan and then two costly mistakes in the penalty box gave Selangor the lead.
“We had some chances to attack in the second half, but our midfield could not function as Selangor were in counterattack mode.
“We played well but we have to stop making unnecessary mistakes because it is killing us,” he said.
The Croatian added that perhaps new faces in the next transfer window could help change things in the dressing room. – The Vibes, April 1, 2023
