KUALA LUMPUR – Having collected one gold and four bronze medals at the SEA Games so far, the Malaysian esports contingent is confident of doing better in Cambodia when the Games start next week.

In 2019, the national team brought home one gold and one bronze medal during the esports debut at the Philippines Games, followed by three bronzes in Hanoi last year.

This time around in Phnom Penh from May 5 to 17, esports team manager Andrew Cheong is confident the contingent can add to their medal tally as the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang women’s team look to be hopefuls for the win.

“The competition for every game differs, but looking at the overall performance, I am very hopeful for the women’s Mobile Legends team.

“Our toughest competition would be the Philippines and Indonesia. We have a good chance for the medal not just because of the competition but the effort the team has been putting in is tremendous,” he told The Vibes.

This is the first time the SEA Games is featuring a women’s gaming division for the Games, and the team will be competing in the women’s category from May 10 to 12.

With a contingent size of 46, Malaysian athletes will be competing in seven categories in four different games, including Mobile Legends, PUBG, Valorant, and Attack Online 2.

Andrew, better known as “Sir Cloud”, explained that the team will carry out all their preparations in Malaysia as they will depart to Cambodia in phases depending on the competition day.

“We will be staying in the hotel where the venue is and there, we will have rehearsal days where we get to try out everything ahead of time.

“During the competitions, the organisers will provide the baseline devices for both PC and mobile.

“But for PC, we are allowed to bring our own peripherals or accessories such as the keyboard, mouse, and headphones,” he added.

Andrew will be departing to Cambodia earlier than the rest of the team as he will be involved in the team managers’ meeting and the technical set-up to ensure there are no issues with the team’s equipment. – The Vibes, April 29, 2023
