KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia has got their wish as they will meet rivals Denmark in the Sudirman Cup quarterfinals in Suzhou, China, today.

Speaking to The Vibes, Akademi Badminton Malaysia technical advisory panel member Roslin Hashim said the team wanted to meet the European badminton giants because the players believe they would have a better chance at overcoming Denmark and progressing into the semifinals.

This was deduced based on both teams’ head-to-head record.

“This is what we hoped for, it has become our reality to meet Denmark in the quarterfinals.

“We are hopeful to be playing against them, but we do not want to take it for granted and will be aware of their gameplay by taking one match at a time.

“Now it is up to the players to prepare themselves for the match, while the rest of us will provide the support that is needed.

“We want to, at least, make it into the semis, based on our initial target,” said the former world number one men’s singles shuttler when contacted.

In the quarterfinal draw last night, Malaysia will face Denmark at 5pm today.

If the team manages to win, they will either meet South Korea or Chinese Taipei in the semifinals.

As for the rest of the quarterfinal draw, China will face Indonesia, while Thailand will play Japan.

Ahead of the game today, Roslin added that the players have had a full day of recovery and are ready to meet their opponents.

“Most importantly, there is no serious injury to any of the players.

“Our team’s cheer is also an important factor in creating a positive vibe and lifting their spirits when playing in an intense environment.

“Of course, the pressure of competing will always be there, but at least when we proceed into the quarterfinal match today, the team cheer will help them to focus,” he added.

For the record, the furthest Malaysia has gone in the Sudirman Cup was the semifinals twice – in 2009 and 2021, respectively. – The Vibes, May 19, 2023
