KUALA LUMPUR – National singles coach Hendrawan says singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong needs to be more consistent if he were to make it to the Paris Olympics next year.
The current world number 21 has shown a lot of promise recently.
He marched to the quarterfinals of the Thailand Open earlier this month beating world number eight Chou Tien Chen of Taiwan.
But then he was defeated by world number 14 Lee Cheuk Yiu from Hong Kong.
“Tze Yong has shown improvement, but we know that is not enough.
“Sometimes he can upset a top player, and after that, he would lose.
“We know there are still some shortcomings to his game, and we will try to improve him further,” said the Indonesian when met at Akademi Badminton Malaysia today.
Hendrawan says it is still early in the Olympic qualification cycle for Tze Yong to collect points and he will help the 23-year-old fight all the way.
“Whether he makes it to the Olympics depends on if he can make it to the top 16…it is still early, and there is plenty of time for him to make it.
“We should focus on making it to the top 16 first; there are still plenty of tournaments left.
“He needs to start producing better results to increase his ranking.
“He needs to get to the semifinals more consistently and even try to win a tournament, then he will be a shoo-in for the Olympics,” said Hendrawan.
Yesterday, the badminton fraternity was shocked by the news of national singles coaching director Wong Choong Hann’s resignation.
Asked if Choong Hann’s resignation has had an impact on Tze Yong’s training, Hendrawan said everything is business as usual.
“Everything is moving along as usual.
“Choong Hann was not really involved with Tze Yong’s training, but he received reports and the training schedule, so he was aware of what was going on.” – The Vibes, June 16, 2023
