NATIONAL Unity Minister, Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang joined the chorus of those who hit out at Tun Dr Mahathir Mahathir for his racial remarks against the Chinese and Indians.
In a statement, he said political leaders should serve as examples in nurturing values of unity, harmony and the spirit of togetherness.
“I urge all sections of society, including political leaders, not to make any statements that touch on religious and ethnic sensitivities, as it can cause hatred. Political leaders should serve as role models in fostering unity, harmony, and a sense of togetherness,” he said.
He said he was very disappointed and strongly condemned the statement by Dr Mahathir Mohamad who claimed that the ‘Indian society in Malaysia is still not completely loyal to this country because they identify with their countries of origin’.
Aaron said Malaysia was built on a foundation of togetherness through a social contract which eventually led to independence.
Dr Mahathir in an interview with Indian-language TV channel Thanthi TV alleged that the Indian and Chinese communities in Malaysia do not identify as Malaysians because they still have loyalty to “their countries of origin”.
Yesterday, former Klang MP, Charles Santiago said action should be taken against Dr Mahathir for making divisive statements that are potentially harmful in this multiracial society.
"Indians and Chinese have contributed to the socioeconomic and political development of Malaysia.
"Dr Mahathir knows this is incitement. He is also encouraging bigotry and hate.
"But he does not care about the consequences of his actions. Is this because he is ashamed of his Indian ancestry?," asked Santiago.
Majlis Gagasan Malaysia chairman, Dr Manivannan Rethinam rejected and questioned the sanity behind Dr. Mahathir's insinuations that Malaysians of Indian and Chinese descent lack loyalty.
"Dismissing the loyalty of these communities based on ethnicity not only contradicts constitutional values but also overlooks their pivotal roles in shaping Malaysia's rich tapestry.
"Such unwarranted statements portray a disregard for the vast contributions made by all communities," he said in a statement. - The Vibes, January 14, 2024
