KUALA LUMPUR – The announcement on a total lockdown starting June 1 to curb the worsening Covid-19 crisis led to crowds at hypermarkets and grocery stores nationwide yesterday.
Although most waited patiently in long queues to gain entry, concerns have been raised that the huge convergence could trigger more infections, possibly resulting in new clusters.
People came out in droves to buy food and other essentials before the lockdown takes effect.
Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah has pleaded for the public to stay home unless there are urgent matters to attend to, warning that the country’s healthcare system is on the brink of collapse.
“If we collapse, you and your family may not be able to get the best medical treatment. More unfortunately, there may not be any more beds in hospitals. Even worse, if you are in critical condition, but no intensive care unit beds are available.
“Our front-line workers are already exhausted, but we continue to brace for the sake of saving your lives.”
Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin two days ago announced the two-week nationwide lockdown amid soaring Covid-19 infections despite the restrictions in place. – The Vibes, May 30, 2021
