KUALA LUMPUR – Merdeka and Malaysia Day are usually set aside for feel-good flag-waving and national pride.

But this year has been unusually difficult. There’s no need to list the ways in which we’ve struggled; just that this feels like a year that public service announcements about food and multicultural neighbourhoods don’t quite cut it.

This year, we need real hope. We need to be reminded that there are countless Malaysians working hard day in, day out to build a better future for all of us who live here.

In every industry. In every state.

Running our hospitals. Feeding the hungry. Growing businesses. Making policies. Educating children. Rehabilitating coral reefs. Making us laugh. Inspiring us through art and sport.

They all believe they can make a difference. They can’t do everything, but they can do their “one thing”, and together we can build a nation.

We need hope, now more than ever, so let these voices inspire you. What do you dream for the future of Malaysia? – The Vibes, August 31, 2021
