CHINA has released an official white paper detailing its position on the origins of Covid-19, the nation’s pandemic control efforts, and its contributions to the global response, while strongly criticising the United States' handling of the crisis.
Issued on Wednesday by the nation’s State Council Information Office, the document is titled “Covid-19 Prevention, Control and Origins Tracing: China’s Actions and Stance”, and is structured into three main chapters in addition to a preface and conclusion.
These are: “Contributing Chinese Wisdom to the Study of the Origins of SARS-CoV-2,” “China’s Contribution to the Global Fight Against Covid-19,” and “The Mismanaged Response of the US to the Covid-19 Pandemic.”
According to China’s official news agency Xinhua, the white paper emphasises that since the emergence of the virus, China has allocated considerable resources to scientific research into its origins, working with both domestic and international scientists.
“Upholding its international responsibilities with openness and transparency,” the report states, China initiated a number of joint studies in areas such as clinical and molecular epidemiology, environmental tracing, and the identification of potential animal hosts.
The white paper highlights China’s collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO), noting the “WHO-convened Global Study of Origins of SARS-CoV-2: China Part – Joint WHO-China Study”.
This and other investigations included molecular analysis, animal reservoir assessments, and cold-chain transmission studies.
According to the document, the findings “ruled out the possibility of Wuhan being the natural origin of SARS-CoV-2, and concluded that a Wuhan lab leak is extremely unlikely.” The report claims these studies provided “critical empirical evidence” and “a research paradigm for future investigations.”
