AN Air India flight bound for New Delhi was forced to return to Hong Kong mid-flight due to a suspected technical issue, marking yet another incident involving a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft.
According to a report by India TV, cited by Bernama-Anadolu, the aircraft’s pilot detected a technical anomaly shortly after departure, prompting the aircraft to turn back. Flight AI315 landed safely back in Hong Kong.
As of now, no official statement has been issued by either Air India or aviation authorities regarding the nature of the technical problem.
British Airway Boeing 787-8 encounters technical fault
In a related development, a British Airways Boeing 787-8 en route from London Heathrow to Chennai also had to abort its flight due to a technical fault.
The BA35 flight, which experienced a suspected flap failure, circled over the Strait of Dover to dump fuel before returning safely to Heathrow at 1.50pm.
British Airways described the decision to return as “a standard precaution after reports of a technical issue,” adding, “The flight landed safely with crew and customers disembarking as they normally would, and our teams worked hard to get their journeys back on track as soon as possible.”
The recent spate of technical incidents involving Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners, particularly in the wake of the deadly Ahmedabad crash, is likely to reignite scrutiny over the model’s reliability and safety record.
Air India has confirmed that over 270 people perished in Ahmedabad crash incident, with the sole survivor being a British national of Indian origin.
The aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff, sending plumes of black smoke into the sky and igniting surrounding residential buildings. Fire crews battled for hours to contain the flames and recover remains from the wreckage. - June 16, 2025
