MOUNT Ibu, located in West Halmahera, North Maluku inIndonesia, erupted again just before noon on Thursday, sending a column of ash and smoke reaching approximately 600 metres into the sky, according to reports from Indonesian media outlet ANTARA.

The eruption occurred around 11.40 a.m. Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT), according to Saum, an official at the Ibu Volcano Observation Post (PGA Ibu).

The volcano, standing 1,325 metres above sea level, remains at Level II or “Waspada” (Alert) status.

PGA Ibu has advised residents and visitors to refrain from any activity within a 2-kilometre radius of the volcano, including sectoral areas extending up to 3.5 kilometres towards the northern crater opening.

Authorities have also issued warnings about falling volcanic ash. Residents are urged to wear masks and protective eyewear to reduce exposure to fine volcanic particles. “All parties are requested to maintain a safe and orderly situation, avoid spreading false information, and follow the directives of the local government,” said Saum.

The West Halmahera local government is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with the Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) in Bandung and PGA Ibu in Desa Gam Ici to ensure timely updates and public safety measures. - December 4, 2025
