A POWERFUL earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale struck northern Japan today, causing alarm across the region and prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning. The tremor comes only days after a 7.5-magnitude quake hit the same area, injuring at least 50 people.

The Japan Meteorological Agency initially reported the quake as measuring 6.5 magnitude, but later revised the reading to 6.7.

Officials warned of potential tsunami waves reaching up to one metre along the northern Pacific coast.

"The situation is still developing, and residents are urged to follow safety directives and stay away from coastal areas," the agency advised, highlighting ongoing risks in the aftermath of repeated seismic events.

The latest quake underscores the vulnerability of Japan’s northern regions to frequent seismic activity, raising concerns about preparedness and the potential for further damage following recent earthquakes. - December 12, 2025
