THAILAND’S military said on Thursday that negotiations with Cambodia over their shared border have moved into a second day, with overall clashes along the frontier showing a downward trend.
Xinhua cited Thai media reporting today that the secretariat meeting of the Thai–Cambodian General Border Committee began at about 9am local time on the Thai side of the border in Chanthaburi province.
The meeting was attended by around 30 Cambodian delegates, along with Malaysian representatives from the Asean observer team stationed in Thailand.
At a press briefing later in the day, a Thai military spokesperson said the intensity of border skirmishes between the two countries had generally declined, with exchanges of fire now limited to specific localised areas.
Despite the reported easing of tensions, incidents on the ground continued to be recorded. Thailand’s 2nd Army Area Command said two Thai soldiers were injured by a landmine while carrying out demining operations near the Ta Kwai Temple area.
On the Cambodian side, the Ministry of Defence said another civilian was killed on Thursday, bringing the civilian death toll in Cambodia to 31 since the conflict escalated.
The current round of secretariat-level discussions is scheduled to run from Wednesday to Friday.
Thai Ministry of Defence spokesperson Surasant Kongsiri said that if these preliminary talks proceed smoothly, they will be followed by a meeting between the defence ministers of both countries on Saturday.
The negotiations are being closely watched by regional partners as both sides seek to contain tensions and prevent further escalation along the long-disputed border. - December 26, 2025
