U.S. President Donald Trump issued a stark warning on Friday, pledging that the United States would act to protect Iranian civilians if the country’s security forces employ deadly force against peaceful protesters.

“We are locked and loaded and ready to go,” Reuters cited Trump writing in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, underscoring his readiness to respond to potential violence.

The announcement comes as Iran experiences its most widespread demonstrations in three years, triggered by economic grievances.

The unrest, which erupted after shopkeepers began protesting on Sunday over the government’s handling of a steep currency decline and soaring prices, has rapidly spread across multiple provinces.

Several protesters have already died in clashes with security forces, marking a dramatic escalation of tensions.

Iran’s economic difficulties have been compounded since 2018, when the U.S. reinstated sanctions following Trump’s withdrawal from an international nuclear agreement during his first term.

The renewed sanctions have contributed to inflation, currency instability, and growing public frustration, creating fertile ground for the ongoing demonstrations.

Trump’s comments signal a heightened U.S. interest in the civil unrest, framing the situation as a potential flashpoint in U.S.-Iran relations and reinforcing his assertive foreign policy stance toward Tehran. - January 2, 2026
