BRITISH Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s recent visit to China to explore a “more sophisticated relationship” with the world’s second-largest economy has drawn a sharp warning from former U.S. President Donald Trump, illustrating the tightrope Britain faces in balancing trade ambitions with geopolitical considerations.

During three hours of talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Starmer called for enhanced market access, lower tariffs, and investment agreements, signalling London’s intent to strengthen economic ties despite longstanding concerns among Western allies.

Addressing reporters at the Kennedy Center during the premiere of the film “Melania,” Reuaters cited today that Trump said, “Well, it’s very dangerous for them to do that, and it’s even more dangerous I think for Canada to get into business with China,” emphasising his longstanding scepticism of Western engagement with Beijing.

Starmer, whose centre-left Labour government has grappled with delivering the economic growth it promised, has prioritised improving ties with China while asserting that Britain can do so without upsetting the United States.

Speaking on the flight to Beijing, he remarked, “The relationship we have with the U.S. is one of the closest relationships we hold, on defence, security, intelligence and also on trade and lots of areas.”

The Prime Minister’s initiative comes at a time of heightened volatility in global politics, following Trump’s unpredictable policy pronouncements, including threats of trade tariffs and controversial moves regarding Greenland, which have unsettled traditional U.S. allies, including the United Kingdom.

Starmer’s engagement underscores a pragmatic approach, seeking to expand Britain’s economic footprint in Asia while reaffirming its historic alliance with Washington, navigating the fine line between pursuing national economic interests and managing transatlantic relations. - January 30, 2026
