A MODERATE earthquake registering 5.2 on the Richter scale struck the Asaluyeh district of Bushehr Province in southern Iran early Sunday, according to Anadolu Agency citing local media reports.

Iran’s official news agency, IRNA, confirmed the earthquake occurred at a depth of 18 kilometres.

The epicentre was located 24 kilometres from Asaluyeh, 32 kilometres from Kushknar in Hormozgan Province, and 45 kilometres from Galehdar in Fars Province.

Authorities reported that, as of now, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or significant property damage.

Iran lies within a seismically active zone and has experienced several devastating earthquakes in recent years.

One of the country’s deadliest modern disasters occurred in 2013 when a 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck Bam, claiming at least 34,000 lives.

More recently, in July 2022, a 6.1-magnitude quake hit southern Hormozgan along the Persian Gulf coast, resulting in five deaths and over 80 injuries.

Experts continue to monitor the region closely, given its vulnerability to frequent seismic events. - February 1, 2026
