THE Middle East is experiencing a sharp escalation in military confrontations, with Israel, Iran, and regional actors embroiled in a widening conflict that has already sent oil prices soaring and global markets tumbling.

AP cited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying his country is “creating the optimal conditions” for Iran’s government to fall, adding that airstrikes are designed “to give them the space needed to go out to the streets.”

The conflict’s immediate impact has already reached neighbouring states.

A United States KC-135 refuelling aircraft crashed in western Iraq on Thursday while supporting operations against Iran.

Officials from U.S. Central Command said the crash was not the result of hostile or friendly fire, and rescue efforts are underway.

At least five crew members were aboard, though casualties have not yet been confirmed.

Global oil markets reacted sharply to the instability. Brent crude prices surged above US$100 per barrel, climbing as high as US$101.59 amid fears of supply disruptions following threats to the Strait of Hormuz.

In response, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a temporary easing of sanctions on Russian oil to offset potential shortages, saying, “We’re going to take those sanctions off until the strait is up.”

Hostilities have spread across the region. In northern Israel, a missile attack on Zarzir, near the Lebanese border, injured approximately 30 people, primarily from shattered glass, according to Magen David Adom, the country’s ambulance service. Hezbollah confirmed that it had launched multiple rockets toward Israel early Friday.

Saudi Arabia reported that its air defences intercepted 38 drones within a few hours targeting the Eastern Province, including critical infrastructure, U.S. Embassy sites in Riyadh, and military bases hosting American forces.

Iraq has also felt the effects of the conflict. French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that a French soldier, Chief Warrant Officer Arnaud Frion of the 7th Battalion of Chasseurs Alpins, was killed in a drone attack on Irbil in northern Iraq.

Several other French troops were wounded. French forces are stationed in Iraq as part of a multinational counterterrorism mission supporting local operations against Islamic State militants.

The intensifying crisis has unsettled financial markets globally. Stocks fell sharply, with the S&P 500 losing 1.5% on Thursday, marking a return to volatility following a brief period of relative calm.

Analysts warn that continued military escalation combined with strategic adjustments in oil supply could sustain uncertainty for energy markets and global investors, as the region remains highly volatile and the geopolitical stakes rise. - March 13, 2026
