IRAN has placed the death toll from its recent conflict with the United States and Israel at more than 3,400, as a fragile ceasefire enters its second week.
The figure was released by the Foundation of Martyrs and Veterans Affairs, which said the War had claimed 3,468 lives within the Islamic republic.
Foundation head Ahmad Mousavi, quoted by the Iranian Students News Agency, said that 3,468 “martyrs... fell during the recent conflict”.
The fighting erupted in late February following US and Israeli strikes on Tehran, and has since resulted in competing casualty estimates from official and independent sources.
Earlier figures from the Legal Medicine Organisation of Iran, issued on April 12, reported 3,375 killed across the country.
However, the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency has put the toll higher. In its April 7 estimate, the group said at least 3,636 people had been killed, including 1,701 civilians — among them at least 254 children — alongside 1,221 military personnel and 714 individuals whose status remained unclassified.
The discrepancies highlight the difficulty of establishing a definitive count amid tight reporting restrictions and limited access to strike locations.
Agence France-Presse said it had been unable to independently verify casualty figures or visit affected sites within Iran, underscoring the uncertainty surrounding the true scale of losses from the conflict. - April 19, 2026
