MALAYSIA and Russia are set to deepen bilateral ties ahead of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations next year, following high-level discussions between His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin in Moscow.
The meeting underscored growing cooperation between the two countries as both leaders expressed a shared commitment to elevating relations beyond six decades of diplomatic engagement spanning trade, international cooperation and strategic partnerships.
According to a statement posted on Sultan Ibrahim’s official Facebook page, His Majesty described Malaysia-Russia ties as a steadily expanding relationship that has developed into a strong and productive partnership since diplomatic relations were established in 1967.
“The long journey undertaken together and the significant achievements in Malaysia-Russian Federation relations should be commemorated through a meaningful and historic celebration,” His Majesty said during the private audience with Putin.
Sultan Ibrahim also formally invited the Russian president to undertake a State Visit to Malaysia in 2027 in conjunction with the diamond jubilee celebration of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
His Majesty said he believed the proposed visit would become a new catalyst for expanding strategic cooperation between Kuala Lumpur and Moscow.
The Kremlin meeting followed an earlier engagement between the two leaders in St Petersburg in January, which Sultan Ibrahim described as constructive and positive, with both sides sharing the aspiration to further strengthen bilateral relations.
Putin welcomed the King warmly upon his arrival at the Kremlin and reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to maintaining close ties with Malaysia across diplomatic, economic and multilateral platforms.
“Our relations between our countries are developing well. Next year we celebrate the anniversary of our diplomatic relations,” Putin said during the meeting.
The Russian president noted that both countries continued to cooperate actively in international forums, including the United Nations and ASEAN, while also highlighting ongoing trade and economic collaboration.
“Trade and economic relations between Russia and Malaysia are developing, and there are all prerequisites to overcome a slight decrease in trade.
“I want to thank you once again for being with us, and to express the hope that relations between our states will develop as steadily as they have so far,” he said.
Sultan Ibrahim also made history during the visit by becoming the first Malaysian Head of State to be invited as Guest of Honour at Russia’s 81st Victory Day celebrations in Moscow, a gesture widely viewed as a significant diplomatic recognition by the Russian government.
The special invitation from Putin reflected what Malaysian officials described as the strong and growing relationship between the two countries, as well as Malaysia’s rising international profile.
His Majesty joined several world leaders at Red Square to witness the annual military parade commemorating the Soviet Union’s victory in the Second World War from 1941 to 1945.
Among the foreign leaders present were Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Laotian President Thongloun Sisoulith and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.
The visit is also seen as highlighting the increasingly active role of the Malaysian monarchy in supporting diplomatic outreach and strengthening international relations in support of national interests. - May 10, 2026
