TENS of millions of Americans are enduring extreme heat as a prolonged heatwave grips central and eastern parts of the United States, with forecasters warning that record-breaking temperatures could persist through the July 4 holiday weekend.

The National Weather Service (NWS) said dozens of daily temperature records could be challenged as many areas are expected to exceed 38°C, with high humidity pushing the heat index as high as 46°C in some regions.

More than 60 million people are currently under heat alerts, the agency added, as authorities urged residents to take precautions against dangerous heat-related illnesses.

Major cities have activated emergency response measures. Chicago has opened cooling centres and deployed city workers to conduct wellness checks on vulnerable residents, while New York authorities announced what they described as an “unprecedented, historic” response plan, including hydration vans and temporary cooling stations equipped with misting fans and cooling towels.

AFP cited on Wednesday that Washington DC is also expected to experience temperatures approaching 37.8°C during the Independence Day period, coinciding with large public gatherings planned for celebrations on the National Mall.

Health officials have warned of increasing risks of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, particularly among the elderly, children and outdoor workers, while also highlighting dangers for pets and vehicle-related heat exposure.

Authorities reported that nine children have already died this year in hot-car incidents in the United States, compared with an annual average of 37, according to the National Safety Council.

The extreme weather is also affecting sporting schedules, with several FIFA World Cup fixtures being played in oppressive conditions across the United States, including matches in New York/New Jersey and Dallas.

Earlier matches were disrupted by weather delays, while some group-stage games have already been played in conditions exceeding thresholds recommended by player unions for suspension or postponement.

Emergency services in multiple cities have also treated dozens of fans for heat-related illness, underscoring growing concerns over athlete and spectator safety as the tournament continues under extreme summer conditions. - July 1, 2026
