A JETSTAR Airways aircraft narrowly avoided a collision with another plane at Sydney Airport today after its pilots were forced to brake firmly when the aircraft came into close proximity, the budget carrier said.

“Our aircraft was following instructions by Air Traffic Control when the pilots were forced to brake firmly after another aircraft came in close proximity,” a Jetstar spokesperson said.

“We have commenced an investigation into the incident.”

ABC News reported that the other aircraft involved was operated by Qatar Airways and that no passengers were injured.

Qatar Airways did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Airservices Australia, the country’s air traffic management organisation, said it was reviewing the incident and would assist with any safety investigation.

The incident comes as Jetstar, Australia’s dominant budget airline, prepares to introduce new charges for passengers using overhead luggage bins from 2027.

Jetstar is owned by Qantas Airways. - August 9, 2026
