SINGAPORE – A 16-year old who had a cardiac arrest shortly after a strenuous weightlifting session at a gym six days after receiving his first dose Covid-19 vaccine dose is recovering in the hospital, according to Singapore’s Health Ministry (MoH).

In a Facebook post, the ministry clarified on speculation over the death of a teenager, among others, to an untoward effect of Covid-19 vaccines.

“We are aware of speculation in Facebook, Telegram and WhatsApp groups featuring an obituary that has led to conjecture that a teenager passed away from a Covid-19 vaccine-related severe adverse event.

“We wish to clarify that the demise mentioned in these posts and messages was not vaccine-related. It is also unrelated to the gym incident involving a 16-year who had a cardiac arrest after exercising.

“This boy is recovering in the hospital and our best wishes are with him and his family,” it said.

On July 5, MoH said it was alerted by Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) to a case of a 16 year-old male Singaporean patient, who was treated at the hospital’s emergency department after he collapsed at home on July 3.

The ministry said he was subsequently transferred to the National University Hospital (NUH) where he was in critical condition at the intensive care unit.

He received his first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech (Comirnaty) vaccine on June 27 and was well for the following five days after vaccination, it said.

MoH said prior to his collapse on July 3, he did weightlifting at the gym with very heavy weights, above his body weight.

The preliminary diagnosis of his condition is an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, it said.

The ministry advised all persons in particular adolescents and younger men aged less than 30 years old to avoid strenuous physical activity for seven days after their vaccination, be it the first or second dose as a further precautionary measure. – Bernama, July 16, 2021
