SINGAPORE – An 84-year-old Singaporean died of Covid-19 complications yesterday, bringing the republic’s virus toll to 44.
The victim, a man, is the seventh fatality this month, said the Health Ministry in a report last night.
Labelled as Case No. 66,875, the victim developed symptoms on July 28 and was admitted the next day to National University Hospital, where he tested positive for the disease.
“He had not been vaccinated against Covid-19, and had a history of cancer, ischaemic heart disease, diabetes mellitus, hypertension and hyperlipidaemia,” said the ministry.
It noted there is continuing evidence that almost all fully vaccinated individuals do not suffer serious symptoms when infected, “unless they have underlying medical conditions that make them more susceptible”.
“Over the last 28 days, the percentage of unvaccinated people who became severely ill or died is 9.6%, while that of the fully vaccinated is 1.0%.”
As at noon yesterday, Singapore’s coronavirus caseload stood at 66,061.
There are 488 patients currently in hospital, 30 of whom require medical oxygen and 10 in critical condition.
There are 116 active clusters in the country, each with between three and 1,151 infections.
As of Thursday, 74% of the Singaporean population had received both vaccine doses, while 81% had received at least one shot. – Bernama, August 14, 2021
