SYDNEY – The animals impacted by Australia’s “black summer” blazes include more than 60,000 koalas, according to a report released today.

According to the Xinhua news agency, the report was commissioned by environmental group World Wide Fund for Nature Australia (WWF-Australia), recounting the devastating habitat losses across the country.

WWF-Australia chief executive Dermot O’Gorman said the report shows that the fires are “one of the worst wildlife disasters in modern history”.

He said the total number of animals, including birds, affected is estimated at nearly three billion.
