PRASARANA Malaysia Berhad achieved a historic milestone on the eve of the New Year 2026, recording its highest-ever passenger volume since the company’s establishment, with a total of 1.54 million journeys made across rail and bus services on December 31.

The figure represented a 0.76 per cent increase compared with the previous year, reflecting the effectiveness of operational planning and transport management across the Klang Valley and Penang during a period of exceptionally high demand.

Prasarana Group president and chief executive officer Amir Hamdan said about 3,000 Rapid KL frontline personnel were deployed throughout the night to ensure smooth operations, including crowd control and passenger safety during the celebrations.

He said strategic collaboration with the Royal Malaysia Police in traffic management and enforcement of bus lanes enabled services to operate largely on schedule despite severe congestion in major hotspots.

“Efficient operational coordination allowed Rapid KL services to run smoothly even with significant surges in passenger numbers at several key locations,” he said in a statement.

Amir added that close coordination between Prasarana’s auxiliary police, event organisers and security teams at major shopping centres such as Pavilion Bukit Bintang, TRX Mall and Suria KLCC played a critical role in managing passenger flows and maintaining optimal safety levels.

According to Prasarana’s records, rail services accounted for 1.29 million passengers, while bus services, including Rapid On-Demand, carried 251,737 passengers.

Among rail lines, the Kajang Line recorded the highest ridership with 396,141 passengers, followed by the Kelana Jaya Line with 321,381, the Putrajaya Line with 234,158, the Ampang and Sri Petaling Line with 246,885, and the Monorail with 90,748 passengers.

For bus services, Rapid KL recorded 183,944 passengers, followed by Rapid Penang with 48,002 and the Sunway Bus Rapid Transit service with 19,791 passengers.

Amir said the successful management of large-scale operations reflected the high level of preparedness and professionalism among Prasarana staff in ensuring that public transport services were delivered safely and effectively even under challenging conditions.

Prasarana also expressed its appreciation to all security agencies, strategic partners and members of the public who chose to use public transport, contributing to the broader agenda of sustainable urban mobility. - January 2, 2026
