SEOUL – Hyundai Motor Co, South Korea’s biggest carmaker by sales, today said it has suspended operations at its Brazil plant due to a lack of semiconductors.
The company said works at its factory in Piracicaba, Sao Paulo, are halted from yesterday to Sunday, the Yonhap news agency quoted a company spokesman as saying.
“Starting July 12, the plant will partially resume operations.”
Hyundai said it is planning to continue production at its Brazil facility with one shift.
The global chip shortage forced the factory, which usually produces 300,000 vehicles in a three-shift system, to reduce output by a third late last month.
The company has seven domestic plants – five in Ulsan, and one each in Asan and Jeonju – and 10 overseas.
The facilities abroad comprise four in China, and one each in the United States, the Czech Republic, Turkey, Russia, India and Brazil.
They have a combined capacity of 5.5 million cars. – Bernama, July 6, 2021
