KUALA LUMPUR – SKS Airways, Malaysia’s latest commercial airliner, launched its inaugural flight during a ceremony held at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang today.
The event was attended by Transport Minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong, who at 1:30pm officiated the inaugural SKS Airways flight from Subang to Pulau Pangkor in Perak.
Among guests onboard the maiden flight were the airline’s director Datuk Rohman Ahmad and officials from the aviation, travel and tourism industries.
In a speech delivered at the event, Rohman said with hubs in Subang and Senai, Johor, the company, which offers passenger, cargo and charter services, intends to connect Malaysia with destinations in the Asean and Southern China regions.
“As a new set-up, we are not only nimble and agile, but also able to tap into any opportunities that arise.
“We are positioning ourselves to capitalise on the current pent-up demand for domestic travel, thus giving us a head start when international travel resumes,” he said.
Speaking at the event, Wee said the launch is indicative of positive consumer sentiments towards air travel, particularly domestic travel.
“In October last year, the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) released the results of its consumer survey, which revealed that 60% of Malaysian travellers are looking forward to domestic air travel.
“Therefore, I believe the introduction of SKS Airways, particularly to popular island destinations like tax-free Pulau Pangkor, will be a boon for domestic travel while also reviving the local tourism operators in these places,” he said.
The airliner debuted with its fleet of 19-passenger Twin Otter aircraft, which is globally renowned for its toughness and reliability with commendable take-off and landing capabilities.
The wholly Malaysian owned airline offers easy access to island hopping with flights commencing between Subang to Pulau Pangkor beginning January 26, Subang to Pulau Redang beginning January 31, as well as to Pulau Tioman from Subang and Johor Bahru in the second quarter of 2022.
With the commencement of all three routes, the airline will have 12 scheduled flights per day with a maximum daily capacity of 228 passengers, with offers of all-in fares as low as RM160 one way.
