GEORGE TOWN – The abandoned Penang Mutiara Beach Resort is set to reopen after 16 years as international management chain IHG Hotels & Resorts plans to renew its partnership with the property owner.
State executive councillor Yeoh Soon Hin, who oversees the tourism portfolio, told journalists here last night that IHG plans to renew its partnership with the property owner, which will allow the resort to operate after years of closure. Once a popular resort for tourists, Penang Mutiara Beach Resort has been closed since 2006.
He added state government will help facilitate plans required for submission to local authorities, and renovation is expected to be completed in 2025.
IHG and property owner Tradewinds Corporation Bhd recently signed a deal to renovate the premises.
Yeoh said the reopening of the resort is in tandem with the state’s tourism master plan 2030.
Malaysia Association of Hotels (MAH) vice-president Khoo Boo Lim said the reopening will create more jobs.
Currently, Penang has more than 13,000 hotel rooms in 127 registered hotels here. – The Vibes, June 23, 2022
