PORT KLANG – The federal government is ready to discuss with Sarawak regarding the state’s desire to retake control of Bintulu Port, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
He said Sarawak has not yet submitted an official report regarding the intention but said that any discussion will be held in the spirit of the unity government.
Loke added that the port’s handing over will have to go through various legal processes and his ministry welcomes joint discussions with involved stakeholders.
“Any possibility, anything can be discussed and negotiated. I understand what aspirations the Sarawak government wants. I do not rule out the discussion and we are open but it will require a lot of processes because Bintulu Port is a federal port.
“A federal port is regulated through a parliamentary act. Jurisdiction and regulation of the port are under the federal government through the Transport Ministry,” he told reporters after officiating the launch of Infinity Logistics & Transport Sdn Bhd’s new warehouse here today.
It was earlier reported that the Sarawak government will discuss with Putrajaya on regaining control of Bintulu Port, which currently falls under the federal government’s jurisdiction.
Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the move would enable Bintulu Port to be administered and developed as a state-controlled port in accordance with its strategy.
Meanwhile, Loke said the development of a proposed third mega port in Selangor in Carey Island, Kuala Langat, will be carefully discussed at the cabinet level.
A feasibility study carried out by the Port Klang Authority for two years starting in 2019 found that the area was suitable for a third port after Northport and Westport, according to Loke.
He said the development of the port on Carey Island is a long-term project which is expected to be implemented in the next 20 to 30 years. – Bernama, February 1, 2023
