PENANG- BORN classical pianist Vincent Ong became the first Malaysian to qualify for the finals of the prestigious 19th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland.

Reportedly the "Olympics" of classical piano competition, Ong made the finals together with 10 others from all over the world.

His mother Sue Sudarak posted on social media about her son's achievement, and that the nation is rooting for him.

Ong is a former winner of the 19th International Robert Schumann Competition and a fellow of the Lieven International Piano Foundation in Vienna.

Ong also currently teaches piano at the Märkisch-Oderland District Music School in Petershagen, Berlin.

Having displayed musical aptitude from the age of four after enrolling at the Digital Music Academy, Ong’s life is now almost entirely devoted to the piano.

The final round, from Oct 18 to 20 in Warsaw, features each finalist performing two iconic works by the renowned Polish composer Fryderyk Chopin, including the celebrated Polonaise-Fantaisie (Op. 61).

In addition, each pianist will present a piano concerto of their choice, accompanied by the Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra.

The winners of the competition will be announced on Monday night, Poland time, which will be early Tuesday morning in Malaysia. – October 20, 2025
