THE King of Pop has once again proven his enduring appeal — this time through the lens of cinema.

The first official trailer for ‘Michael’ the highly anticipated biopic chronicling the life and legacy of Michael Jackson, has shattered global viewing records, amassing more than 230 million views within 24 hours of its release.

Distributed by Lionsgate and Universal Pictures, the teaser now stands as the most-viewed music biopic trailer debut in history, surpassing previous record-holders Bohemian Rhapsody and Elvis.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua and produced by Graham King — who also helmed Bohemian Rhapsody—Michael stars Jackson’s real-life nephew, Jaafar Jackson, whose performance has already sparked early awards speculation.

The trailer, set to a haunting new mix of Billie Jean, traces the pop icon’s journey from child prodigy to global superstar, capturing both his creative brilliance and the personal struggles that defined his later years.

Opening with a reimagining of the Jackson 5 era, the teaser unfolds through a series of sweeping concert recreations, studio scenes and flashes of private turmoil.

“You wanted the truth,” Jaafar’s Jackson declares, staring into the camera — a moment that has since gone viral, drawing millions of reposts across social media platforms including X and TikTok.

Viewers and critics alike have lauded the trailer’s authenticity and emotional precision. Fans expressed disbelief at Jaafar’s physical and vocal likeness to his uncle, while music historians praised Fuqua’s attention to detail in choreography and production design.

“It doesn’t feel like an impersonation — it feels inhabited,” wrote one early viewer.

Lionsgate’s promotional campaign was executed with military precision, with the trailer launched simultaneously across multiple territories and subtitled in various languages.

Teaser placements were also strategically aired during Sunday’s NFL games and on Spotify’s global homepage, highlighting the continuing strength of the Michael Jackson brand — still synonymous with performance perfection decades after his death.

For Fuqua, *Michael* marks a bold artistic departure. Best known for high-octane thrillers such as *Training Day* and *The Equalizer*, he has described his approach to Jackson’s story as “a tragedy wrapped in talent.”

Reports suggest the film will weave together dual timelines — charting Jackson’s meteoric rise alongside his later isolation — linked by a central question about the human cost of fame.

Producer Graham King said the project is designed to balance reverence with honesty. “This is not just a movie,” he said in a recent statement. “It’s an act of remembering what the pursuit of greatness costs.”

Industry analysts predict the record-breaking trailer could signal another major box-office success for the music biopic genre. *Bohemian Rhapsody* earned more than US$900 million worldwide, while *Elvis* revitalised interest in musician-led prestige dramas.

*Michael*, however, carries unique expectations — its challenge will be to satisfy both devoted fans and critics wary of oversimplifying Jackson’s complex legacy.

Whether it becomes a triumph or a controversy, one thing is certain: *Michael* has already reignited the cultural fascination with the man who defined pop superstardom — and once again, Michael Jackson has broken a record. - November 13, 2025
