HOT on the heels of a leaked low quality trailer just a day ago, Sony Pictures and Disney has released the official teaser trailer for ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ – set for a December 17 release (let’s cross our fingers that cinemas will be open here by then).
The almost three-minute-long teaser continues from where 2019’s ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ left off, with Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and MJ (Zendaya) dealing with the consequences of the former’s secret identity being blown-up in public.
Oh, and he’s also been accused of being a terrorist and murderer.
With his life in shambles and his friends under immense public scrutiny, Parker turns to fellow New Yorker Stephen Strange a.k.a Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) – and that’s where the fun starts.
It’s been no secret that the post-‘Endgame’ Marvel Cinematic Universe would be focused on more fantastical concepts, not that the previous dozen or so movies were completely grounded in reality.
Part of the reason this large-scale cinematic venture has been successful, is that it has gradually introduced more absurd or outlandish ideas as it has gone on.
For example, the first ‘Iron Man’ was about a billionaire who built a robot suit and fought against terrorists and corporate treachery. A few movies later he’s teaming up with a Norse god, a green giant, a frozen-in-time super soldier, a superspy, and a master archer (okay, in context that last one sounds a tad unimpressive), to fight off an alien invasion of New York City.
By ‘Avengers: Endgame’ there’s a foul-mouthed space raccoon and a talking tree, a man who can shrink and be a giant, and a genocidal purple alien. That movie also introduced time travel to the series, albeit in a simple way that heavily references ‘Back to the Future Part 2’.
Following the success of the recently concluded first season of ‘Loki’ on Disney+, audiences are even more prepared for multi-dimensional shenanigans, and ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ seems to deliver on that front.
The teaser ends with the reveal of Alfred Molina reprising his role as Doc Ock from 2004’s superhero classic ‘Spider-Man 2’. That character has not been seen in any iteration since that movie. There was also a quick shot of a bomb of a type used by the Green Goblin, an archetypal Spider-Man villain who has also not been seen in some time.
The teaser doesn’t really show much besides the premise of the film, but there are rumours aplenty that previous Spider-Men (mans?) Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will reprise their roles, thus bringing to life the classic Spider-Man meme.
‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ will be the fourth Marvel movie released in a six month period – a remarkable pace brought on by Covid-related delays. It’s also the most highly anticipated with ‘Shang-Chi’ and ‘The Eternals’ being relative unknowns. Here’s hoping we’ll actually get to see it on the big screen. – The Vibes, August 24, 2021
