Amid the pandemic, Segaris Art Center has shown a commitment to promoting the local arts scene

Segaris Art Center marks 10th anniversary in conjunction with Samsung Malaysia

SEGARIS Art Center is celebrating its decade-long anniversary with a group exhibition featuring over 90 Malaysian artists at White Box, Publika, Kuala Lumpur from October 4 to 17. The Segaris Art Center’s 10th Anniversary Show was officially launched on October 10.

The exhibition is held in partnership with Samsung Malaysia Electronics, where Segaris Art Center has selected 10 paintings that are available for Malaysian patrons on Samsung’s The Frame Art Store from October 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022.

The event is supported by the Cultural Economy Development Agency (Cendana) under Pakej Rangsangan Industri Kreatif Malaysia (Prisma) by the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia and is administered by MyCreative Ventures.

Artworks by artists from various segments: young and emerging, mid-career, senior and established will participate in this show namely Juhari Said, Rafiee Ghani, Agnes Lau; Ain Rahman; Hug Yin Wan; Faiz Mahdon; Kide Baharudin; Al-Khuzairie Ali; Edroger Rosili; Faisal Suhif; Jamil Mat Isa; Jalaini Abu Hassan; Datuk Tajuddin Ismail and many more.

In line with Segaris Art Center’s mandate to provide a platform for emerging artists to connect to the arts ecosystem, Mohd Nizam Rahmat, its chief executive officer said, “Many young artists have showcased their talents, ideas and creativity through exhibitions organised by Segaris Art Center. It is an honour for us to nurture their talents and witness their career development.

"They are the future of Malaysian art and we encourage them to flourish in the international art scene. Similarly with the established and senior artists, their active participation in our art programmes affirm our role in connecting with the art community holistically.”

Adapting to the new normal, Segaris Art Center has also conducted a series of virtual art exhibitions since the beginning of the pandemic such as WRWT (2020); No(w) Showing (2020) and Sa-HariHari by Kide Baharuddin (2021).

“We hope to see Segaris Art Center grow into a museum art centre of its own. The idea is to explore other departments such as conservation and art services unit; curatorial and art consultancy with more collaborations with others locally and internationally,” said Nizam.

Segaris Art Center is also a participating gallery for CIMB’s Artober 2021.

Since 2011, Segaris Art Center has produced 102 art exhibitions consisting of group and solo shows as well as participations in local and international art fairs namely Art Expo Malaysia; Art Moments and Art Jakarta in Jakarta, Indonesia; and Singapore Contemporary, Singapore.

Over 800 artists have displayed their artworks in exhibitions organised by Segaris Art Center throughout the years.

Art shows involving local and international art institutions were also produced to provide opportunities for cross-border academia and industry collaborations and by bridging the gap between graduates and the industry. Among them are Aqal (2016); School of Thought (2017) and BEDA: Alumni of Faculty of Art & Design UiTM and Alumni of Institut Seni Indonesia, Yogyakarta (2019). – The Vibes, October 13, 2021
