KUALA LUMPUR – The film 'Roh' directed by Emir Ezwan was named the best film at the 31st Malaysia Film Festival (FFM) Awards on Friday.

The film also won other awards including Best Screenplay (Emir Ezwan), Best Supporting Actress (Junainah M. Lojong) and Best Child Actress (Putri Qaseh).

The award ceremony was attended by Communications and Multimedia Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa, Deputy Minister Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin and Secretary-General Datuk Seri Mohammad Mentek, reported Bernama.

Also present were National Film Development Corporation (Finas) chairman Zakaria Abdul Hamid, Finas chief executive officer Prof Dr Md Nasir Ibrahim and OKU Sentral president and Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chairman Senator Datuk Ras Adiba Radzi.

Meanwhile, actor Zul Ariffin won the Best Actor award through the film Sangkar while Best Actress was won by Sinje Lee (The Garden of Evening Mists).

The Karyawan Sepanjang Zaman award went to Fauziah Nawi while Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Nawab received the Behind the Scenes Special Award.

The FFM31 staged at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) was held under the new norm with strict compliance of standard operating procedures (SOP) set.

After winning the awards, Amir told Harian Metro that 'Roh' was made with a budget of only RM360,000.

"Our philosophy at Kuman Pictures is, we don't make expensive films," said Amir.

He added they are more comfortable producing films with a low budget.

"We make films at a low cost. We don't want many locations and we don't want many actors. We haven't made films for 10 years.

"When I started Kuman Pictures in 2018, I wanted to go back to the indie era where films were made in their own way and we gave creative freedom to directors. This is because directors have the most creative power in a film.

"And the selection of actors is made on the basis that they can act – and not on how many millions of followers they have (on social media)," he said.

Filming took place over 15 days in a forest near Dengkil, Selangor.

'Roh' was also selected to represent Malaysia at the 93rd Academy Awards for the International Film category. – Agencies, December 12, 2021
