AVATAR came out on in December 2009 and subsequently blew up box office records to become the highest grossing movie of all time with a total earnings of US$2.84 billion, a record it still holds to this day, despite billion dollar grosses for mega-blockbusters becoming the norm over the last decade.

That success was a triumph for director James Cameron, who made previous number one movie Titanic in 1997. He merged epic filmmaking, breakthrough special effects technology and populist sensibilities in these two movies. His other directing credits, the first two Terminator movies, Aliens, are nothing to sneeze at either.

Now, he's back with Avatar: The Way of Water, with hopes of box office domination once more. There are doubts of course. Most sequels come out within a couple years of the first movie, but for Avatar it has been 13 years. Pop culture has changed, with the ever increasing ascendance of superhero movies – the first Avengers movie came out in 2012, and that already feels like a long time ago.

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water tells the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

Directed by James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, the film stars Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement and Kate Winslet.

To whet audiences’ appetites, the studio will re-release Avatar in theaters on September 23, and Avatar: The Way of Water will open in cinemas on December 15. – The Vibes, May 10, 2022
