JOKER director Todd Phillips has revealed the first look at Lady Gaga in character for the sequel to his hit 2019 film, 'Joker'.
Phillips confirmed last year that the sequel's title will be 'Joker: Folie a Deux', which means madness or delusion shared by two people. This naturally fueled speculation that the upcoming movie would feature a love interest for Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck.
Phoenix won the Oscar for Best Actor for playing this version of the iconic Batman archnemesis.
Following reports that Lady Gaga had been tapped for a role, the actress cleared the air by releasing the first official teaser in August of last year.
She is expected to play Harley Quinn in 'Folie à Deux', although that has not been confirmed. While Joker took a lot of liberties with the DC villain's source material, if Gaga is set to play Harley Quinn and the sequel is based on her existing origin story, this could be their first meeting while she's still a therapist named Dr Harleen Quinzel.
An abbreviated version of this relationship was told in flashback in 2016's Suicide Squad, where the characters were played by Jared Leto and Margot Robbie – the latter of which has reprised the character a couple more times.
Phillips co-wrote the sequel's script and will return to direct, with Phoenix reprising his role as Arthur Fleck, aka the Joker. In an unexpected twist, it has been reported that Joker: Folie à Deux will be a musical, a far cry from the gritty tone of the first film.
The tease comes after James Gunn and Peter Safran revealed their initial plan for a revamped DC Universe, titled Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, last month. Phillips' interpretation of the Joker, exists outside of the main universe that their plan is tackling, as does Matt Reeves' Batman trilogy starring Robert Pattinson. – The Vibes, February 15, 2023
