THE number of students from mainland China coming to enrol in Malaysian colleges and universities plus those already studying here hit the 47,000 mark this month.
This is a significant increase from the 40,000 mark recorded in August.
Acting Head of China Consulate General Office in Sarawak, Song Chang Jong, said the recent decision by Malaysia and China to facilitate visa-free movement between both countries has seen tremendous benefits for both sides.
"This visa exemption policy has seen a surge not just in bilateral trade and tourism but also in education.
"As of today, there are already 47,000 students from China who have enrolled plus those already studying in higher institutions of learning throughout Malaysia.
"China tourists visiting Malaysia have hit 2.28 million and we expect to see these figures rising even further," he said at a dinner with Sarawak officials in Kuching last night.
The gathering was to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Malaysia and China. - November 9, 2024
