THE United Kingdom is set to explore closer collaboration with Malaysia in the fields of higher education and emerging technologies, including renewable energy, green technology, automation, and artificial intelligence.
Malaysia’s Higher Education Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, announced the development following a courtesy visit from the UK Minister of State for Skills, Rt Hon Baroness Jacqui Smith, in Putrajaya.
“This bilateral meeting paved the way for constructive discussions on strengthening strategic cooperation between Malaysia and the United Kingdom in higher education and skills development,” Zambry said in a Facebook post.
The proposed cooperation spans a wide range of areas, including technology transfer, joint curriculum development, and the exchange of students and academic staff. Particular emphasis will be placed on specialised skills training in rapidly evolving sectors.
Zambry highlighted Malaysia’s technical and vocational education and training (TVET) ecosystem, which includes 36 polytechnics and 105 community colleges.
“These institutions not only produce highly skilled graduates but are also actively expanding the implementation of Work-Based Learning and strengthening ties with both local and international industries,” he said.
He expressed optimism that the collaboration would enhance educational mobility and foster innovation, ultimately contributing to a workforce that is both competent and competitive on the global stage.
“This also reflects growing recognition by other countries of Malaysia’s position as one of the region’s leading higher education hubs,” Zambry added. - August 2, 2025
