EVERY school will have at least one trained Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) coordinator under new measures introduced by the Ministry of Education (MOE) to enhance risk management and improve student safety.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the initiative was part of the School Safety Management Guidelines and Student Protection Policy launched on June 11.
She said the audit and monitoring aspects, especially on building structures and infrastructure in school grounds, were being strengthened to create a more conducive and safe environment.
Apart from involving a special committee, the implementation of the entire aspect also received the support of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
"NIOSH's expertise is to ensure issues related to (safety) of buildings, drains and fires.
"They also provide full training and guidance to ensure that at the school level there is a safety coordinator," she said during the Minister's questions session in the Dewan Rakyat today.
She was answering a supplementary question from Roslan Hashim (PN-Kulim Bandar Baharu) on the level of safety of buildings and infrastructure in schools to ensure the environment remains safe and free from risk of accidents.
Responding to the original question, Fadhlina said that the Ministry always places the safety, well-being and protection of students as a priority in the management of all educational institutions under its control.
The commitment, she said, is being implemented comprehensively, encompassing five focuses, namely prevention, monitoring, reporting, intervention and enforcement, supported by strategic cooperation across ministries and related agencies.
"The MOE's Safe School Management Guidelines and School Student Protection Policy was launched on June 11 as the main reference for all educational institutions to strengthen the physical, social and emotional safety of students through various measures, in addition to the establishment of the Special Committee on Educational Institution Security Reform in August 2025.
"This committee's role is to examine, improve and strengthen policies, mechanisms and implementation of safety measures in educational institutions based on actual needs in the field.
"The level of school safety is continuously assessed, and it will be implemented through focused support from the state education department and district education office, if guidance is needed," she said. – July 2, 2026
