CITY University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) and Sunway University are discussing closer cooperation in research and higher education, with possible joint projects in engineering and business among the areas being considered.
A CityUHK delegation led by its Council chairman Professor the Honourable Michael Ngai visited Sunway University and Sunway Group in Malaysia to discuss potential collaborations, including joint conferences, student and academic exchanges, PhD supervision and research partnerships.
The delegation also visited Sunway’s Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Faculty of Medical and Life Sciences, Sunway Business School and Sunway Medical Centre.
CityUHK said the visit followed earlier engagements between the two institutions, including a visit by Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Sir Jeffrey Cheah to CityUHK (Dongguan) earlier this year.
The CityUHK delegation included acting president Professor Chun-Sing Lee, vice-president (Talent and International Strategy) Professor Li Wen Jung, vice-president (Research) Professor Kenneth Leung Mei-yee and chief communications and global affairs officer Professor Shirley Chong.
Sunway University representatives included president and vice-chancellor Professor Sibrandes Poppema, provost and deputy vice-chancellor Professor Abhimanyu Veerakumarasivam and pro vice-chancellor (Education, Employability and Alumni) Professor Chai Lay-ching.
Chong also chaired a workshop with Sunway’s deans and department heads on university rankings, internationalisation and strategic planning.
Both universities are expected to continue discussions on specific projects following the visit.
The delegation later attended a dinner hosted by Sunway Group, where it met Cheah and Sunway Education Group chief executive officer Professor Datuk Elizabeth Lee. – August 18, 2026
