CITY University of Hong Kong has climbed to fourth place in the QS Asia University Rankings 2027, entering the region’s top five for the first time and joining two other Hong Kong institutions in the leading group.
The university, known as CityUHK, moved up three places from seventh last year, making it Hong Kong’s second-highest ranked institution after the University of Hong Kong, which retained the top position.
The latest results also underline Hong Kong’s strong showing in the regional rankings, with five of its universities placing among the top 10.
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) ranked fifth, while the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology shared ninth place.
The rankings, released by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), assessed 1,722 universities across 26 higher education systems.
CityUHK ranked first in Asia in three individual indicators: staff with PhDs, international faculty and outbound exchange students.
It also led among Hong Kong universities in eight indicators, including staff with PhDs, citations per paper, papers per faculty member, faculty-student ratio and four measures of internationalisation.
The university has maintained its leading position locally across international faculty, international students, inbound exchange students and outbound exchange students for four consecutive years, from 2024 to 2027.
Its academic and employer reputation scores also improved in the latest assessment.
Acting president Professor Lee Chun-sing said the university’s rise reflected the efforts of its academic community and its commitment to research, teaching and attracting international academic talent.
He said CityUHK would continue expanding interdisciplinary research and international academic collaboration, while supporting the Hong Kong government’s Study in Hong Kong initiative.
The university also received two QS distinctions — Research and Discovery Champions, recognising its academic reputation, citation impact and publication output, and Learning Experience Champions, which recognises the quality of its learning environment and faculty-student ratio.
CityUHK said it had also been recognised by Times Higher Education as the world’s most international university for three consecutive years.
It is also the second university in Hong Kong to rank among the world’s top 100 institutions across all four major global university rankings — QS, Times Higher Education, US News and ShanghaiRanking. - November 4, 2026
